Insurance

There are many drunk driving accidents each year that result in deaths and there are also many of them that result in the driver getting a DUI or DWI. Many times this affects their insurance policy for the worse. There are certain insurance companies in some states that cater to people who have received a DUI from drunk driving. They are also the companies who can help you file the SR22 form that some states require. Here we will look at a few aspects of that process.

So You Got a DUI

Depending on the state you live in and the type of insurance you have, your insurance company may not know that you were drunk driving and got a DUI or DWI for quite some time. It could even take years. If you really like the coverage you are receiving, you may not need to switch immediately.

What you will need to do is file the SR22 form if you are in one of the states that require it. It is possible, however, to find an insurance company that caters to drunk drivers who will file your SR22 if you get a minimal policy with them. That way you can have your more extensive coverage with the first company but also get your form filed with the second one, again depending on your state’s laws and your situation.

Am I Going to Pay Extra Forever?

It depends on the company you are using and the state in which you live and their drunk driving laws. Many of the companies will raise your premiums if you get a DUI or DWI because you are posing a much stronger risk to the company and the general public if you are choosing to engage in drunk driving.

However, things can get better. There are many companies that provide special drunk driving insurance by offering to help you with the SR22 and other aspects of dealing with those charges. The rates are competitive so it is possible to find a company that will offer you a rate that is lower than you expected.

In the world today, there are many business owners who are in competition with each other. Insurance companies are no different. If you get a DUI or DWI and do not want to tell your original company but still need to file the SR22, you can do so by using various companies when the laws allow it. The competition between insurance companies allows you to stay insured for less money than it used to take to stay insured after drunk driving and getting a DUI or DWI.
