Testing for your own
sobriety
Portable breath testing devices are not only available to law
enforcement officials testing for drunk drivers, but also to the
public. Anyone can purchase breath test devices that will check
Blood Alcohol Content.
There are several kinds of breath test devices, but the most
popular on the market today is the digital design. This style is
small, fitting easily in a pocket, purse or briefcase, and comes
with lights that allow you to see your alcohol content analysis in
the dark.
There is also a version of the digital design that can be connected
to your keychain. This type may not be considered as accurate as
others, but the style is one of the most affordable of the
devices.
Most police officers use what is called a Breathalyzer Kit. This is
a more sophisticated design and is considered by many to be the
most accurate, easiest to calibrate, and has longest lifespan.
Anyone can purchase this style of Breathalyzer, and some police
departments have been known to encourage drivers to buy these in an
effort to fight the increasing number of drunk driving related
accidents.
The most inexpensive alcohol content testing device is the
disposable kind. Some work through a saliva test and others require
a breath test. Either style, however, is inexpensive (some brands
cost as little as $3 a piece) and easy to carry. The one drawback
for these devices is the increased chance of registering a false
positive.
The cost of alcohol content testing devices can vary widely. Some
are several hundred dollars per unit, but others, like the
disposable brands, are only a few dollars each.
