The SR-22: What You Need to
Know
In order to drive a car you have to have auto insurance, and in
order to verify that you have the required coverage, your insurance
provider gives you a document known as the Certificate of Financial
Responsibility. This document – more commonly referred to as
the SR-22 - serves as evidence of car insurance liability.
SR-22 regulations vary depending on a few variables. Not
all states require them of all drivers, but in all states they can
be ordered by the state or the court for driving violations ranging
from driving under the influence to reckless driving convictions.
Individuals who are required to carry an SR-22 document will
be informed of that fact by the court or state department that
requires it.
There is a nominal fee for filing the SR-22 documentation and
though it may vary from state to state, the fee is typically $25.
This fee is only required the first time the document is
filed for, provided you do not allow your insurance to lapse.
Otherwise your insurance company will have to file for the
SR-22 again and you will be required to pay the filing fee
again.
Additionally, it is important to be mindful of the fact that if
you allow your insurance to lapse at any time, your auto insurance
provider is required by law to inform the authorities that your
SR-22 is no long valid and in force.
